Live from Dallas | Part II

So another couple of weeks have come and gone here in the good 'ol state of Texas.  If there was ever a moment I wished time would slow down, now might be one of those moments - only for the reason that I LOVE being in Dallas and yet again I am not looking forward to going back to St. Louis here in a few short weeks (although I absolutely can't wait to see Jen, my PA loves and float the river!!)  Working at a children's hospital has been just the experience I was hoping for.  I absolutely LOVE it, just as I thought I would.  Working in the emergency department has been the perfect mix of everything that I love - and the three 12 hour shift per week make the lifestyle pretty legit.  The only thing that would make it better right now would be to be receiving a pay check.  Working for free...and actually paying tuition to work is not cool.  Especially with the AMAZING shopping Dallas has.

Over the past several weeks I've seen a variety of things in the ED.  Some sadder than others.  I've seen fear in children's eyes relieved by a simple grip of the elbow and a twist of the forearm (Nursemaid's elbow).  I've sutured gashes so perfectly closed leaving childhood memories in the form of scars on almost every body part imaginable.  Ripped foreskin?  No problem - I'll just use Dermabond and glue that back together.  Broken arm?  I got it - I'll drug your child up, reduce the fracture, and put a cast on it...all under the close supervision of my preceptor of course...PA Fisher (also quickly becoming a great friend again).  Then there's the not so fun cases like telling a 13 year old girl she was infected with chlamydia from the first guy she ever had sex with.  And then having to report it to social work.  Thank God for social workers.  I'm pretty sure she instilled the fear of life in that child to never have sex again and gave her the guidance her mother never shared with her.  It makes me realize how truly blessed I was to have a mother who cared about me and every detail of my life SO much, even when I thought she was the meanest mom in the world.

The social scene in Dallas has continued to impress.  While I haven't been kicked out of any more bars, thankfully (as told in
Part I), I have enjoyed every night I've gone out.  I'm sure a lot of it is because it's new to me.  But the people here are so friendly and every time I go out, I meet new people.  The social scene is ENDLESS.  There are so many places to go to.  And so many things to do.  Every single night.  I've been working on being a social drinker...and not a drunk.  I had dinner with two friends from Pittsburg (my home town) last week and we came to a conclusion that when you're from a small town, you never learn how to be a social drinker.  You only learn how to get wasted because there's really nothing better to do.  People in Dallas go out every night of the week.  But they don't necessarily get trashed every night of the week.  I plan to master this skill as well.
Yesterday I got my first REAL taste of a true Texas Honkey Tonk in the form of Ft. Worth, TX. Holy Texas! When I first told my uncle I was going to head to the stock yards for the Fourth of July he smirked and told me to get ready for an experience. He wasn't kidding. In terms of Dallas/Ft. Worth, he called Dallas "sophistication" and Ft. Worth "country." Now I won't go as far as to say Ft. Worth has no sophistication at all, but damn....it sure is night and day. Cowboys, Wranglers and shit kickers...with dried shit still on them. I saw a black cowboy (which apparently isn't too common) as well as an Asian Cowgirl (she was quite the two-stepper) and of course several, tattooed and toothless coming-out-of-the-cracks total W.T. wearing far too little clothing.

And on a final note - Classy With a Side of Sassy will be moving south as of December.  I've decided to make a change and a move in my life.  And there's no better time than now.  Don't get me wrong, KC - I love, love you dearly.  But I'm afraid if I move back, I'll always regret that I never gave Dallas a chance.  I'm afraid I'll get settled in to life in KC with the same circle of friends, the same bars, the same scenery and never meet anyone new.  Dating in KC hasn't been successful thus far, so I think it's time to give Dallas a chance.  I know it's going to be hard without my strong circle of friends.  But I also know, I'll meet new people in no time.  There are tons of Jayhawks down here...more than I probably realize.  And the added bonus - the medical community in Dallas is phenomenal!  PAs are in such a high demand I should have no problem finding a job.  And even better - they make bank!  It's time I face the challenge and take the plunge.  Bring it on Dallas.  I'm ready for you!

Happy Mother's Day!

A dog is not merely a pet, a dog is family.

Well since it is Mother's Day, I guess it's only appropriate I make a special post to all you mothers out there.  No, I have no idea what it's like to have an infant stuck to my tit every 2-3 hours.  No, I don't know what it's like to carry a child for 36-40 weeks, feel like you have to pee every two seconds, have raw nipples or have hemorrhoids.  And no, I don't know what it's like to squeeze a watermelon out of a hole with a diameter of a large grape or small orange (depending on your "experience").  But I have witnessed first hand the most amazing miracle of life.  The first time I saw a baby born, I was literally in the back of the room crying tears of joy and "bearing down" so hard with every contraction like my efforts could help the soon to be mommy giving birth.

My little one and me the day I adopted her
July 2006

Little one....so tiny then!
I get it that there's nothing like a mother's love and blah blah blah I'll never know until I have a child of my own.  But let me tell you, I never in my life thought I could love another creature as much as I love my little one, Miss Marley Marie.  She is the sugar to my strawberries and the caramel to my Twix.  I may not have birthed her, but she is like my child.  I take her out every few hours, make sure she poops and pees, make sure she has food and water and baths every few weeks.  We go for walks, we play fetch, we snuggle and we take pictures.  She's the most amazing little fur ball I've ever encountered. Yes, I'm slightly biased.

Miss Marie LOVES her Jayhawk Dress!
The day I went to get Marley was interesting.  I'd been looking in to getting another dog and had been checking the papers weekly.  I was constantly going back and forth between a puggle and some other breed with a poo in it...I can't remember if it was a Shia-poo or a Malti-poo...whatever, you get the idea.  So I see this ad in the Topeka Journal and within minutes I was on the phone with the potential breeder.  Within an hour I had persuaded my then boyfriend to come with me to pick out "our" little one.  I convinced him the kennel was only an hour or so away.  Yep, that turned in to like two hours away somewhere north of Topeka in some small, po-dunk town.  He was so pissed at me because I was soooo excited and I wouldn't stop to get gas.  The gas gauge was pushing beyond E.

Boots wit da fur!
Once we arrived, the woman who owned the kennel went back in to her barn (she wouldn't let us go - I realize now, probably was a red flag in the dog buying world) and came back literally with a laundry basket of puppies.  Shia-poos, Malti-poos, Long Haired Chihuahuas and two Pomeranians.  I remembered from picking out my first puppy the best way to pick out a little one is to see which one will come to you.  She let all the dogs out and as I looked over the Poo breeds I decided they all had way too much Poo in them and were way too nappy and curly (sorry, not a Poodle fan).  Then my attention turned to this tiny, sable colored Pomeranian running and jumping around attacking all the other dogs trying to play.  Right then, I knew she was mine.  I handed over my $100 for my pup with the bum knee (she had a 3rd grade patella which more or less doesn't make her "perfect" according to the AKA or breedable...like I care) and we were on our way to becoming mommy and puppy.

So vain!
Life has never been the same since.  There's nothing better in my life than coming home to someone soooo excited to see you, even if it's partly due to the fact that she's about to piss herself and wants to go outside.  She gives kisses and licks my tears away when I'm sad.  She cuddles when we sleep and is the most lovable little girl EVER!  Not much compares to the bond and companionship between a dog and his/her master.

Sleeeeepy beeeebeeees
Anyway, I realize Mother's Day means a lot more...or maybe just something different to those of you reading with new babies, toddlers, teens or grown children.  For that, Happy Mother's Day to you.  I can't even imagine those feelings, but I know one day I will and I know I'm going to be an AWESOME mother.  Not only because I've already been practicing for five years on my little one, but because I was raised by one of the most amazing, compassionate, hard working women I've EVER met.  My mom would do anything in the world for me...and I literally mean A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G.  She has set the best example for me and I can only hope to be half the mom she has been to me.

Even after years of tears, "I hate you", "You're the meanest mom in the world" and "I'll never be like you," here I am, striving to be just like you.
 I love you, mom.

P.S. I suggest you all read one of my fellow friend's blogs today that he wrote about his mother.  It's very touching and I had tears in my eyes.  He's absolutely HILARIOUS, so check out his other writings too.  And, I inspired the name of his blog.  Check out Awkward with a Side of Ranch.

Survivor. LiveStrong. VOTE NOW.

Every once in awhile someone makes their way in to your life for no apparent reason.  Slowly over time you learn more and more about that person and realize what a true inspiration he or she is.  That's Brooke.  I don't even remember how exactly we met - my assumption is through her older brother Brett - which for the record, I don't even remember how we met.  I do remember living in the same dorm as her freshman year in Oliver at KU, but the most I probably did was smile at her in passing.  I always thought she was so beautiful though and seemed so full of zest.  Just take a quick peak at this picture and I'm sure you can agree that yes, she is gorgeous.  Not only is she beautiful physically, but she is also just as beautiful if not more spiritually.  I don't even know her that well (we're working on that), but there are certain people who you come across in your life and you just know.  She's one of them.

"...the scar on my stomach
reminds me every day to protect my skin"
-Brooke Budke
Little did I know, Brooke has quite a history.  Six years ago she was diagnosed with Melanoma - a deadly form of skin cancer.  I can't even imagine being the young age of 21 and being diagnosed with CANCER.  According to Brooke, the cancer spread through all 4 layers of her skin in her abdomen.  They were able to excise the tumor before it spread any further in to her abdomen and lymph nodes.  Thank God.  After being cancer free for six years, she still diligently checks her skin for any changes and sees her dermatologist annually.

So what's all this mean?  Well, Brooke has entered a contest to be styled by Athleta, a clothing site for women a wide variety of athletic clothing for fitness, yoga, running and even swimwear.  AND WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE SURE SHE WINS!  Had I known sooner, I would have posted this MUCH sooner, but TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO VOTE.  I'm asking you, my AWESOME blog readers to please, please, please take a moment to vote here.

Being on track to becoming a physician assistant, I must throw in a little health education, especially with summer coming up.  Melanomas typically develop from pigmented skin lesions already present on your body, such as from moles or nevi as we like to call them in the medical world.  Common sites are on the face, arms and other sun exposed areas.  Think you have any suspicious skin lesions?  Use the ABCDs to help determine and call your doctor to be seen.

ABCDs of MELANOMA:

Assymetry: Does one side look different from the other?
Borders: Are the borders of the skin lesion irregular, notched or blurred?
Color: Are the colors uneven and different with various shades of brown, black or tan?
Diameter: Is the skin lesion larger than 6mm (think of a pencil eraser)?
Evolving: Is the skin lesion growing faster than other skin lesions you have?

If you answered yes to any of these, get it checked out!!  Don't waste any time!  For more information and some pictures of various types of melanoma to look and compare to, check out this PubMed Health website.

I challenge everyone to drop your draws, get, get, get naked and check your body out from head to toe today in honor of Brooke.  Oh and of course....
GO VOTE FOR HER!!!

I'm Baaacckkkk

Another six weeks is over which also means my DanVegas sightings and Royal Donut days are over.  I am back in Kansas City for 6 weeks and couldn't be more excited.  My life is pure HAPPINESS right now!

www.brooksiderbarandgrill.com
To The Brooksider:  Thank you for the wonderful welcome back last night and for over serving me.  You never cease to amaze my liver with your endless amounts of Vodka Redbulls and tequila shots.  I will admit, you got me good last night - HUGE shout out and massive THANK YOU to Erica for being kind enough to lend me a hair tie and pat my back while dry heaving....sorry TMI.  But, on a slightly more positive note... I have great news to report.  I didn't get kicked out!!  As many of you may or may not know, I've ran my mouth once or twice.  I'm really good at getting accused of doing crazy things like throwing drinks (WAS NOT ME) and ice (yea, that was me - but we were playing catch).  I look forward to many more dance offs in the Boom Boom Room dancing around like a high schooler on the verge of losing her virginity.

Welcome back toast!
Jay, Me and Abra
To My Friends: I couldn't be happier to be back in KC for the next 6 weeks and am so excited to see everyone more frequently!  Dallas is going to have some big shoes to fill this summer to get me to leave you all and move there.  You all are what makes me love Kansas City so much.  I love my friends and I love, love, love being constantly surrounded by Jayhawks.  I'm still getting used to not freaking out when I see Jayhawk anything on other cars.  I love the feeling of being home, knowing where I'm going and seeing familiar faces no matter what hot spot I decide to frequent (which btw, I need to try all the new restaurants while I'm here, so let's get started).  So here's to many more evenings of fun and laughter together.  Cheers!

"Here's to KU"

NOTE:  The following article/blog was written by Paul Pierce, a 1998 KU graduate and basketball player (duh) who now plays for the Boston Celtics and is a team captain.  I couldn't pass up sharing a little Jayhawk love...

So who’s still standing in their NCAA pool? I can’t let you in on who’s ahead in our locker room, but I was doing pretty well up until my alma mater let me down. I was crushed when the Jayhawks lost to VCU last week. Not only did it kill my bracket, but I also just couldn’t believe it. I gotta give it to the Rams though, they’ve been playing amazing ball. They’ve got heart, and Coach Smart is…well…smart.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that I was rootin’ for Kansas all the way, and I was pretty excited because the Jayhawks killed it against Illinois and Richmond. I thought it was smooth sailing to the Final Four -- but look what happened! It’s been a crazy tourney this year, but real exciting to watch.

I give KU props, though. They came a long way and outlasted a bunch of other top squads in the tournament like Louisville and Duke. Kansas is always in it and certainly had a good chance this year. I pick them every year to win it because that there’s my alma mater, and I gotta stay true to my roots. But this year they realistically had a great shot at winning it all. They’re quick and well-coached. I like the way they play. I had them up against North Carolina in my final. Gotta give some love to Roy Williams.

But man, another former coach also just about sunk my whole bracket this year. I mean, Rick Pitino really let me down when Louisville lost in the first round -- just about ruined that whole side of my bracket. I had the Cardinals going to the Elite 8! Come on now Coach P., after all those laps I ran for you? Least you could’ve done is get to the Sweet 16 -- but I can’t hate. L’Ville is a strong squad and they don’t call it March Madness for nothing.

Anyway, people ask me if I miss college around this time of year. It’s definitely a special experience being part of the tournament, especially when you go to a school that has the history and tradition Kansas does. I always enjoy this time of year; it’s one of the biggest tournaments in all the world. It was always a fun when I was at Kansas, everybody getting so excited, dressed in blue, watchin’ us on TV. It was unforgettable – and I think it prepared me a little for what the NBA is like.

But when I was at KU, things were different. Not many guys went straight to the pros so early. Most of us stayed for three or four years before going on to the big time. That’s a big difference from today. Now, I can’t blame the guys for goin’ to the league when they get the chance, but a couple years in college definitely gives you the added preparation you need and gives your body the time to grow so you can withstand the long NBA season.

March always makes me think about what it was like when I was a Jayhawk, all the great rivalries. I remember playin’ against Tyronn Lue a lot when he was at Nebraska. That was fun, and then we both ended up playin here in Boston - he even came to my Truth Strikes Again at Foxwoods back in December. We’ve stayed close, which is cool, but I’m definitely not rootin’ for his Huskers any time soon. College rivalries are classic. And what’s cool in college is the rivalries are all about the teams and uniforms vs. individual players. Of course there’s Duke-North Carolina, but I remember the KU -- K-State games. Those in-state tilts were always huge, and it was no different in Kansas. We did a lot of prep for those, and us vs. Missouri was another strong one. Hate to say it, but I never did win a game in Missouri in my time at Kansas. Still gets under my skin. Can you tell?

So even though my bracket didn’t pan out, I’m still proud of Kansas for making it as far as they did. Coach and the guys had a great season -- I know what they’re goin’ through, but you move on and put all your focus into next year. It’s tough because in tournaments like this, no matter how far you make it, only one team wins it all.

---Paul Pierce

SPOTTED: DanVegas, Week Two

"Check us out on Facebook" but only after
you come in, buy a donut or a dozen, a cup
of joe and use our free wifi.

Life in Danville continues to be more interesting every day.  It has been an experience thus far, to say the least.  On Friday, as mentioned previously, I made my way to BWW for basketball and beers.  The night couldn't have ended any better for a Friday night in Danville.  Shortly after blogging and enjoying my fried pickles and Jayhawk win over Richmond, I offered my table to the group next to me who had sparked conversation with me based on my Jayhawk shirt.  A few beers later I had four new friends - Derek, Laura, Allen and Nancy - and of course Derek and Laura's two teenage sons.  I learned all about the town of Danville including where not to go, which happens to be only a few blocks from the VA.  Awesome.  They were the sweetest people and even picked up my tab.  Derek and Laura again invited me over Sunday for more basketball and welcomed me like I was one of their own (even though I was the only one rooting for the Jayhawks - tough loss in a room where everyone is rooting against you).  Big thanks to them for making me feel at home hundreds of miles from home!

I've had my eye out for a few DanVegas sitings and here are a few I stumbled across today.  Enjoy!

Clearance??  At Family DOLLAR?  Dear hey-sus, how much cheaper can it get?

Something about a restaurant in Danville named "Wiener Works"
makes me not want to have a "Wiener" near my mouth any time soon...
no matter what kind it is or what special toppings they offer.

There you have it America - day old Coconut Pie for $3.31....and yes, it includes
a free coffee with ENDLESS refills.  I bring my own Fat Free Coffee-mate and
Splenda to cut down on the true dairy cream they offer here.

JoAnn the "Donut Queen" slinging donuts -
I just found out not only was she a "dancer"
back in her younger days (not a stripper)
she also wanted to be a nun and her family
was in the mafia...oh man.
Finally, props to the Queen of Donuts, Miss JoAnn (employee for 8 years and who apparently was going to be a nun) working the counter today at the Royal Donut.  She keeps everyone's coffee cups filled and moves as fast as that 65+ year old body will let her.  God Bless her.  She seems like my kind of woman - a little firecracker.  I've heard her drop a few curse words talking to the locals and she even chased a few hoosiers (as they call hooligans in this area) out who were causing a ruckus.  I kindly asked her what pie she suggested - Lemon Meringue or Coconut and she responded, "I don't like any of em."  Well then. I should have taken the hint and stuck to the donuts as the slice of pie was far from decadent.  I'll remember that next time.

Lovin' America, lovin' DanVegas, JoAnn and the Royal Donut.

I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T...Do You Know What that Means?

So here I am, sitting at a bar...all alone...in the lovely town of Danville. At the rate I'm going, I'm going to be a regular at Buffalo Wild Wings. Just as I predicted, I'm posted up, at my own table, with a Coors Light, a dash of salt, Fried Pickles...and my computer. I'm not sure if the stares that I am getting are because a.) I'm alone; b.) I'm using my computer; c.) I'm wearing a JAYHAWK shirt; or d.) all of the above. My shirt alone is enough to get a rise out of someone considering I'm only 30 minutes from the University of Illinois (where Bill Self coached before KU and our most recent opponent, who we BEAT - as if you weren't aware). I promise you, I'm wearing my Jayhawk shirt with PRIDE!!

I'd say my stats are pretty good. Since I've been here, I've made friends with the next table - although our conversation started with a Jayhawk insult and some guy just asked me for my number. I politely turned him down. And just for the record - he had all his teeth.

Lovin' America, Buffalo Wild Wings and lovin' my Jayhawks on the corner TV in the back.

Greetings from the ROYAL DONUT

Image courtesy of the Royal Donut
Have you been wondering where I am (which I'm sure ALLLLL of you have)?  Well no worries - I'm alive and currently at one of three locations in the great establishment of Danville, IL that has wireless internet.  Yes.  You read correct.  One of ONLY THREE places with wireless internet.  So, with that being said, over the next 6 weeks, you may not hear much from me.  My establishment here is without internet so I must pack up my Mac and make the drive to one of two Royal Donut locations for a little internet time, a coffee and at least one calorie filled donut.  While I'm making no claim to beauty, I can guarantee the gentlemen here won't mind the 50 pounds I'm going to be putting on thanks to the Royal Donut.  Wireless is only available to customers meaning I MUST make a 78 cent purchase in order to use the net and write to you.  My donut clerk is a gem.  She has a lisp and moves about as fast as a snail.  Since I've been here, there have been approximately 5 customers (mostly via the drive through) and I'm pretty sure I'm at the  "busy" location.

I don't even know what to say.  If you're not 'Merican,
you don't deserve to own a liquor store.
*Actual Danville, USA sighting.
I went back around the block to snap
this gem.

Over the next 6 weeks I hope to share some stories of living the "simpler" life here in Danville.  I'm guaranteed to stumble across a few interesting stories and sightings.  For starters, let me give you an idea of the life I'm living here.   Last night my housemates and I went out for a special dinner (to say goodbye to another PA Student from Western Michigan).  The location for that special dinner...Buffalo Wild Wings.  Yep.  B-dubs is considered a delicacy in Danville.  Your only other option for a nice dinner out...Garfield's.  I'm planning to post up at the bar tomorrow night at B-dubs in my KU gear to cheer on my Jayhawks from this sh*t hole town...alone.  I'm sure I'll meet some handsome chap, hopefully with all his teeth and no B.O.  This place is so run down and depressing that none of the students stick around on the weekend.  Well, no one except for me that is.  I'm going to tough it out in our giant house all alone.  Maybe make the 30 minutes "trip" to Champaign - one of the nurses at the VA told me they have a Chili's there...AND A JC PENNEY'S!!!  Booyah!  And that's a step up from this shanty.  Stay tuned.  I'll let you know how it goes.

So here's to six weeks in Danville and loving America.

What's a girl gotta do for some Kansas athletics?

If you know me, you know how much I love living in St. Louis.  If we were in elementary school, the previous statement would have been made on opposite day.  In fact, I dislike living in St. Louis and am counting down until I can move on to the next city in my life.  I plan to discuss a few of the many reasons St. Louis just rubs me the wrong way, but today I'm just going to focus on Kansas athletics.  Disclaimer: If you love STL, living in STL and everything that is STL...I'm sorry if I offend you.  It's nothing personal!  There actually are some things I like about living in the Dirty Lou...but none will be discussed today.

The number one reason I dislike living in St. Louis...it's infested with Mizzou fans...and being a die-hard Kansas fan...this does not tickle my fancy in the slightest.  Everywhere you turn there is a repulsive fan wearing Mizzou gear.  Every bar in St. Louis is a Mizzou bar.  And it sucks.  Everyone either went to Mizzou or loves Mizzou.  I'd rather slit my wrists than go to Mizzou (complete joke - I'd never slit my wrist - but you get the idea of how much I hate obnoxious Mizzou fans).  I constantly live in fear that someone will slit my tires solely based on my Kansas tags.

I realize STL is a plague of Tigers, but please...I KNOW for a fact there are some Jayhawks here too!  I get that Jayhawk football is really sucking this year (it's a transition year), but when I go to a sports bar I expect that I will be able to find them broadcasting the Jayhawks - even if it's on the TV in the back corner!  Wrong again.  Last night I went to meet a few friends and watch KU play Nebraska and we were informed the would not be playing the game...at a sports bar.  Friday night I had to resort to watching KU basketball slaughter Longwood, 113-75 via the world wide web (shout out to ESPN360).

Just as frustrating...no love here for the Chiefs.  And if you haven't watched the Rams lately or ever...they stink worse than Marley's doo doos....even if they are leading the NFC West...take my word.  Now the Chiefs on the other hand...not only are they leading the the AFC West (at the time of this post -they are currently losing to the Broncos...but that's beside the point) but they are also leading the NFL in rushing yards with an average of 5.0 yards per.  Before you start thinking I'm some amazing sports fan, I'll let you know I looked all this up on NFL.com.

All this girl is asking for is some Kansas athletics in my life on something other than my 14" MacBook screen.  Is that too much to ask?  I think not.  I have this amazing high definition flat screen in my living room for a reason...not to mention the $$$ I pay for AT&T U-verse...please sweet baby Jesus...give me some Kansas athletics (specifically Kansas Basketball) before I go crazy here in the Dirty Lou.

-Stay Sassy, xo

P.S. Thank you Blair for drawing to my attention that the Chiefs are not technically from Kansas....I realize this...but they typically are the "Kansas team" considering they are the closest thing to an NFL team Kansas has.  Smart ass....
